La Dolce Vita Orient Express: Tastes of Tuscan Vineyards

It is the shortest itinerary in the collection: two days and one night, leaving Rome in the morning and returning to Rome the following late morning. You spend the single night on board in your cabin, with the afternoon and evening given to Montalcino in southern Tuscany.

The train runs a round trip from Rome Ostiense north into Tuscany and back. The destination is Montalcino, a hilltop town ringed by vineyards and cypress-lined roads in the Val d'Orcia country, where local hosts meet the train in the afternoon before the overnight return to Rome.

A private transfer from your hotel or from the airport takes you to the La Dolce Vita lounge at Roma Ostiense station, which is the train's own private waiting room. Boarding is in the morning, and the train leaves Rome with lunch served once you are under way.

This itinerary is sold in Deluxe Cabin and Cabin Suite categories. The train has 12 Deluxe cabins, 18 suites and one La Dolce Vita Suite in total, so there are very few of each on any given departure. The fare for each category and date is shown on this page.

Fares start from about EUR 3,060 per person based on two people sharing a cabin, which makes this the most accessible way to try the train. Rates differ by cabin category and departure date, and the exact fare for each date is displayed on this page.

Included are your cabin for the night, all meals on board with menus curated by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, selected beverages including drinks served with meals, the off-train experience in Montalcino as described in the itinerary, live entertainment in the Bar Car and a dedicated cabin steward throughout.

Getting to Rome and home again is not included, nor are personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly set out in the itinerary. Hotel nights in Rome before or after the journey are not part of the fare but we can arrange them for you.

Montalcino is a walled hilltop town in southern Tuscany, surrounded by vineyards and the rolling farmland that makes this one of the most photographed landscapes in Italy. Local hosts welcome the train in the afternoon, and the town's fortress and narrow lanes give wide views across the surrounding hills.

You take a gourmet lunch in the Restaurant Car shortly after leaving Rome, dinner on board that evening, and an Italian breakfast the next morning either in your cabin or in the Restaurant Car. The menus are curated by a three-Michelin-starred chef and built around seasonal Italian produce.

The Bar Car is the social heart of the train, styled after Italian design of the 1960s, with live music from a pianist and vocalist as the train rolls through the night. Selected beverages are included, and guests tend to gather there after dinner rather than retiring early.

Departures currently loaded run from 5 October 2026 to 22 November 2026, and every available date with its fare appears in the list on this page. The train carries only about thirty cabins, so dates on this short itinerary close quickly.

Autumn suits it very well. The harvest season brings colour to the Tuscan hills, the light is at its best for the landscape you came to see, and the towns are far quieter than in high summer. Evenings can be cool, so pack a jacket for the time in Montalcino.

Sole occupancy is available on request with a supplement, since the lead fare assumes two guests sharing the cabin. On a train this small, single-use cabins are limited in number, so ask early and we will confirm the current single rate for the date you have in mind.

A deposit of 30 percent of the tour price confirms your cabin and is non-refundable. The balance is due 125 days before departure, and bookings made within 125 days of departure are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact amounts and the dates they fall due.

Yes, two reduced bands apply, under 5 and 5 to 12, with the age taken as at the departure date. Cabins are compact and the experience is an adult one built around dining and scenery, so it suits older children best. Talk to us before booking a family cabin.

For many guests it is exactly right: you get lunch, dinner, an evening in the Bar Car, a night in your cabin and breakfast on the move, which covers the whole rhythm of life on board. If you want more time, the longer itineraries in the collection run from two to three nights.

Rome is served by Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and by fast trains from across Italy, and travel to the departure city is not part of the fare. Most guests arrive at least a day early and stay in Rome the night before, which we can book for you along with the transfer.

Very little. Bring smart-casual clothes for dinner in keeping with the style of the train, comfortable shoes for walking the sloping streets of Montalcino, and a light jacket for the evening. Luggage space in the cabins is limited, so one small case per person works best.
