Overview
The Charming Douro is an 8-day / 7-night round-trip cruise from Porto aboard the MS Douro Cruiser, the fullest sailing of Portugal’s Douro — the world’s oldest demarcated wine region and a UNESCO World Heritage site. From Porto the ship sails deep into the terraced wine country, calling at Régua, Pinhão, Pocinho, Barca d’Alva and Vega de Terrón on the Spanish border, with optional excursions to Salamanca and the hilltop village of Castelo Rodrigo. All-inclusive on board, with a panoramic tour of Porto and quinta wine tastings included.
Itinerary
| Day 1 - PORTO | Embarkation Destinations: Porto |
Board the MS Douro Cruiser at Douro Marina from 3:00 PM. After the embarkation formalities, relax on board. In the evening, meet the crew during a welcome presentation, followed by a welcome dinner. The ship remains overnight in the area. |
| Day 2 - RÉGUA / PINHÃO Destinations: Régua,Pinhão |
Enjoy a leisurely morning sailing along the Douro, taking in the breathtaking terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. Around midday, arrive in Régua, heart of the Douro wine region, where the world’s first officially designated wine region was established in 1756. In the afternoon continue to Pinhão, the centre of the Douro wine region and home to many historic quintas. See the beautiful Pinhão railway station, famous for its blue-and-white tile panels. Optional: evening visit to a traditional quinta in Avessada, including dinner. |
| Day 3 - POCINHO / VEGA DE TERRÓN Destinations: Pocinho,Vega de Terrón |
This morning, arrive in Pocinho, a small village and former terminus of the historic Douro railway line. In the afternoon, reach Vega de Terrón near the Spanish border, where the Águeda River meets the Douro within the spectacular Arribes del Duero Natural Park. Optional: excursion to the historic hilltop village of Castelo Rodrigo. |
| Day 4 - BARCA D’ALVA Destinations: Barca d’Alva |
Arrive in Barca d’Alva, on the Portuguese-Spanish border. For over a century this was an important railway link between Porto and Salamanca; today the surrounding Douro International Natural Park is known for its dramatic scenery, where the Douro and Águeda Rivers form the natural border between Portugal and Spain. Optional: full-day excursion to Salamanca, Spain, including lunch — discover the historic centre, lively plazas and prestigious university. |
| Day 5 - RÉGUA / LAMEGO Destinations: Régua,Lamego |
Enjoy a relaxing morning sailing back through the Douro Valley. Around midday, stop in Pinhão to explore the region’s renowned wine culture. Included: visit Quinta do Tedo and the Douro Museum to learn more about the history and traditions of the Douro wine region. In the early afternoon continue to Régua, where the ship remains overnight. |
| Day 6 - RÉGUA / DOURO MARINA Destinations: Régua,Porto |
Depart early from Régua and begin the scenic journey toward Porto, enjoying the beautiful landscapes of the Douro Valley downstream. Arrive at Douro Marina shortly after lunch; the afternoon is free to explore Porto — stroll along the river, visit a port wine cellar, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of this beautiful city. |
| Day 7 - DOURO MARINA / PORTO Destinations: Porto |
Spend the morning at Douro Marina, gateway to the Douro and northern Portugal. Later, discover Porto — colourful historic buildings, cobblestone streets and spectacular views of the Douro, especially in the Ribeira district, with the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Included: panoramic tour of Porto (minimum 10 participants), taking in the historic centre, the Ribeira district and the city’s famous port wine cellars. |
| Day 8 - PORTO | Disembarkation Destinations: Porto |
After breakfast, disembark the ship at Douro Marina. Your Douro River cruise comes to an end. |
