La Dolce Vita Orient Express: Rome to Venice

It is a two-day, one-night one-way journey. The train leaves Rome around midday, runs north through the Tuscan countryside with a stop at Bolgheri in the early afternoon, then travels overnight to arrive in Venice the following morning.

At Roma Ostiense station, where La Dolce Vita Orient Express has its own intimate lounge. A private transfer brings you there from your hotel or the airport, and you can relax in the lounge until boarding. Departure is scheduled for late morning.

Bolgheri is a small medieval village in coastal Tuscany, approached along a celebrated avenue of cypresses and surrounded by vineyard country. The train stops in the early afternoon so you can stroll the village at your own pace or take one of the curated a la carte experiences arranged in advance.

They are optional curated activities in the Tuscan countryside around the village, arranged separately from the standard programme and detailed at the time of booking. If you would rather do nothing at all, wandering the village and its surroundings on foot is a perfectly good way to spend the afternoon.

Once back on board, dinner is served in the Restaurant Car with a menu curated by a three-Michelin-starred chef, and the evening continues in the Bar Car with live piano and vocals. Selected beverages are included, and the train runs north through the night towards Venice.

Breakfast is served in your cabin or in the Restaurant Car as the landscape opens out, and the train arrives at Venezia Santa Lucia station. From there a private transfer takes you into the heart of the city, past palaces and reflections on the water.

Deluxe Cabin and Cabin Suite. The train carries 12 Deluxe cabins, 18 suites and one La Dolce Vita Suite, every one en-suite, with interiors inspired by Italian design of the 1960s and a dedicated steward. The fare for each category on each date is shown on this page.

Fares start from around EUR 3,060 per person based on two sharing a cabin, which makes this one of the more accessible ways into the collection. Rates vary by cabin category and departure date, and the exact fare for each date appears in the list on this page.

The fare covers your cabin, all meals on board with menus curated by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, selected beverages including drinks served with meals, the off-train experiences described in the itinerary, live entertainment in the Bar Car and dedicated cabin steward service throughout.

Travel to Rome and onward from Venice is not included, nor are personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Optional experiences are charged separately, and hotel nights at either end can be quoted for you with transfers.

Winter has its own appeal on this route: Tuscany is quiet and bare-branched, Bolgheri belongs to the locals again, and Venice in the low season is at its most atmospheric. Days are short, so you see less countryside in daylight, and warm clothing matters for the afternoon stop.

Most of the journey: you board late morning on day one and disembark mid-morning on day two, with only the Bolgheri afternoon spent off the train. That suits guests who want the train itself, its dining and its Bar Car to be the experience rather than a way of getting somewhere.

Yes, on request and with a supplement, as the lead fare is based on two guests sharing. Cabins for sole use are limited on a train of this size, so it is best requested early. Tell us your preferred date and we will confirm the single rate.

A deposit of 30 percent of the tour price confirms your cabin and is non-refundable. The balance is due 125 days before departure, and bookings made within 125 days of departure are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact amounts and the dates they fall due.

Children can be booked, with reduced rates for under 5 and for 5 to 12, based on age at the departure date. The cabins are compact and the experience is built around dining and scenery, so it works better for older children. Please contact us before booking a family cabin.

Daytime is relaxed, but evenings in the Restaurant Car and Bar Car call for smart-casual dress that suits the styling of the train. Comfortable shoes are worth packing for the walk around Bolgheri, where the streets are narrow, sloping and cobbled.
