La Dolce Vita Orient Express: Rome, Portofino, Venice and Tuscany

It is a three-day, two-night round trip from Rome that takes in the Ligurian coast and Portofino on the first day, Venice on the second and Florence on the third, before returning to Rome. Both nights are spent in your cabin on board.

Because you begin and end in the same city, it is simpler to plan flights around, and you see three very different parts of Italy without repacking or changing hotels. It is also the fullest route in the collection, covering the coast, the lagoon and the Renaissance city in one journey.

At the La Dolce Vita lounge in Roma Ostiense, reached by a private transfer from your hotel in Rome or from the airport. You board there, settle into your cabin, and lunch is served in the Restaurant Car as the train leaves the Eternal City behind.

The train runs north from Rome through the Tuscan countryside and on to the Ligurian coast, with lunch on board on the way. In the afternoon you arrive at Santa Margherita Ligure, where a private transfer takes you across to Portofino for the rest of the day.

It is a small fishing village turned harbour town on a wooded headland, with pastel houses stacked above a compact port and yachts moored in the bay. The lanes behind the quay are steep and narrow, full of boutiques and cafes, and the whole place can be walked in an afternoon.

Breakfast is served in your cabin or the Restaurant Car as the train crosses northern Italy, arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia. The day is yours to explore the canals and passageways freely, or you can take one of the curated experiences, before returning on board for dinner.

On the final morning the train makes its way through Tuscany to Florence, where local guides meet you. You can take in the Renaissance architecture, the piazzas and the views along the Arno at your own pace, or choose an a la carte experience, before rejoining the train in the afternoon.

After Florence the train runs south through central Italy and returns to Rome, where the journey ends. Because you finish in the city you started from, onward travel is straightforward, and we can arrange a transfer to your hotel or to the airport.

Fares start from about EUR 7,000 per person based on two guests sharing a cabin, and rise with cabin category and departure date. The exact fare for each departure is shown on this page, which is the figure to work from when comparing dates.

The price covers both nights on board in your chosen cabin, all meals with menus curated by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, selected beverages including drinks served with meals, the off-train excursions set out in the itinerary, live entertainment in the Bar Car and dedicated cabin steward service.

Travel to Rome and home again is not included, nor are personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance, optional a la carte experiences or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Hotel nights in Rome before or after the journey can be quoted with private transfers.

May and June give long daylight for the Ligurian coast and mild days in Venice and Florence. September and early October bring warm water, softer light and thinner crowds in all three cities. High summer is hot, particularly for a full day on foot in Florence.

Portofino fills an afternoon, Venice most of a day and Florence most of the final morning and early afternoon. In each, you can follow the curated experiences or simply walk, which is how a good many guests prefer to spend the time on a journey this relaxed.

Yes, on request and with a supplement over the sharing fare, since the lead price assumes two people in the cabin. With fewer than thirty cabins on the train, single-use space goes quickly, so ask early and we will confirm the rate for your date.

A deposit of 30 percent of the tour price confirms your cabin and is non-refundable. The balance is due 125 days before departure, and bookings made within 125 days of departure are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact amounts and the dates they fall due.

Yes, with reduced rates in two bands, under 5 and 5 to 12, using the age at the departure date. The cabins are compact and the days are built around dining, walking and cities, so it suits older children. Please contact us before booking a family cabin.

Keep to one modest case each, as cabin storage is limited. Bring smart-casual clothing for dinner and the Bar Car, comfortable walking shoes for Portofino, Venice and Florence, all of which are covered on foot, and a light layer for coastal and evening air.
