La Dolce Vita Orient Express: The Italian Wine Route

It is a 3-day, 2-night round trip from Rome, calling at Montalcino in southern Tuscany on the first day and Verona on the second before returning to Rome. Both nights are spent on board in your cabin. Starting and finishing in the same city keeps flights and hotels simple.

A private transfer takes you to the exclusive lounge at Rome Ostiense, where you can relax before the train departs in the morning. Once settled into your cabin, a gourmet lunch crafted by three-Michelin-starred Chef Heinz Beck is served in the Restaurant Car as the scenery shifts toward Tuscany. On arrival, local assistants welcome you with a transfer into the town.

Montalcino is a medieval hilltop town in southern Tuscany, set above rolling countryside and vineyards, with a fortress, stone streets and centuries of history behind its walls. It is one of the classic views of rural Italy. You can stroll at your own pace or choose from curated a la carte experiences arranged locally.

The train reaches Verona on the second day and local assistants transfer you into the historic centre, a blend of Roman remains, Renaissance architecture and lively street life. You are free to wander ancient streets and see landmarks such as the Arena or Juliet's Balcony, or take a curated a la carte experience. You return to the train as afternoon turns to evening.

One of the a la carte options is a guided walk beginning at Ponte Pietra, the Roman-era bridge at the city's origins, then through alleys and squares to the Scaliger Tombs and Piazza delle Erbe. It continues with a visit to Palazzo Maffei, a baroque house-museum holding more than 500 works spanning antiquities to modern names such as Picasso, Warhol and de Chirico. These experiences are selected and paid for separately from the journey fare.

The itinerary is a round trip, so the third day brings the train back to Rome after the final night on board. Ending where you started means one airport, one hotel and no repositioning at the end. We are happy to arrange extra nights in Rome before or after the journey.

Fares start from EUR 5,780 per person based on two people sharing a cabin. The final figure depends on cabin category and departure date, and every departure is priced individually on this page. All meals, selected beverages and the off-train experiences described in the itinerary are included.

Yes, a cabin can be booked for one guest at a single-occupancy fare. It is higher than the per-person sharing rate because an entire cabin is withdrawn from sale. The rate applying to each departure is shown on this page, and we can confirm it and check availability for you.

Included are accommodation on board in your chosen cabin, all meals with menus curated by three-Michelin-starred Chef Heinz Beck, selected beverages, the off-train excursions described in the itinerary, live entertainment in the Bar Car and a dedicated cabin steward. The on-board side of the trip is effectively fully covered.

Travel to and from Rome is not included, and neither are personal expenses, gratuities or travel insurance. Optional a la carte experiences in Montalcino or Verona are charged separately when chosen. Anything not expressly listed in the itinerary is outside the fare.

The Bar Car is the social centre of the train, with live music rolling through the night and selected beverages included in the fare. It is where guests gather before dinner and linger afterwards, in the spirit of Italy's golden age of rail travel. Attendance is entirely optional if you prefer the quiet of your cabin.

A deposit of 30 percent of the tour price confirms your cabin and is non-refundable. The balance is due 125 days before departure, and bookings made within 125 days of departure are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact amounts and the dates they fall due.

Yes. Children under 5 travel at one reduced rate and children aged 5 up to 12 at another, with the age counted at the date of departure. Children share the cabin with their accompanying adults, so cabin capacity is the practical limit on a family booking. Give us the ages and we will price the booking exactly.

Departures run from 1 December 2026 through 13 November 2027, with sixteen dates currently loaded - the widest choice of any La Dolce Vita itinerary. All of them are listed on this page with their fares and cabin availability. Spring and autumn dates are usually the first to fill.

Departures span late autumn through to the following November, so you can pick the season you prefer. Spring and early autumn bring mild weather and long light over the Tuscan countryside, while winter dates mean quieter streets in Verona and lower demand for cabins. All dates follow the same route and stops.

Flights are not included in the fare. Rome Fiumicino is the main long-haul gateway and the train leaves from Rome Ostiense, where the lounge welcomes you before boarding. We recommend arriving in Rome at least a day early so a delayed flight cannot cost you the departure.

Time on board asks nothing of you, but both stops are explored on foot. Montalcino is a hilltop town with slopes and cobbles, and Verona's historic centre involves a fair amount of walking on hard surfaces. There is nothing strenuous, and local assistants are on hand; tell us about any mobility needs and we will note them on your booking.
