Southern Mosaic is a 10-day, 9-night group tour of southern Italy that starts and ends in Rome. The route takes in Rome, Pompei and Mount Vesuvius, Naples, Pizzo Calabro, Tropea, the Aeolian Islands, Taormina in Sicily, Sorrento, Capri and Caserta.
You begin with two nights in Rome, then visit Pompei and Vesuvius on the way to Naples. Next you head to Calabria via Pizzo Calabro, with a base in Tropea for day trips to Lipari and Vulcano and to Taormina in Sicily. The tour continues to Sorrento and Capri, then Caserta, ending with a night near Rome's Fiumicino airport.
Hotels listed in the itinerary include Hotel Indigo St. George 5-star in Rome, Hotel Romeo 5-star in Naples, a hotel in the Tropea area, Hotel La Favorita 5-star in Sorrento and the Hilton Rome Airport 4-star at Fiumicino, or similar.
On day 2 you visit St. Peter's Basilica, then continue on foot through the historic centre to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Capitoline Hill, and some of Italy's finest squares: Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna below the Spanish Steps. An optional Underground Rome visit can be added in the afternoon.
Yes. On day 3 you tour the archaeological site of Pompei for about 2 hours, then continue up Mount Vesuvius for about an hour and a half to learn about the volcano and enjoy the panorama over Naples. That evening includes a short night sightseeing walk in Naples to Piazza del Plebiscito and Castel dell'Ovo.
Yes, as an option on day 4 in the historic centre of Naples. The class follows traditional recipes, includes a pizza-making experience with tasting and soft drinks, and uses domestic equipment so you can repeat the recipes at home. It runs from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
On day 4 you travel to Calabria and explore the historic centre of Pizzo Calabro and the Piedigrotta Church nearby. The town is famous for its ice cream, and the visit includes a demonstration of it.
On day 5 you sail from Tropea harbour for a full day on the volcanic Aeolian Islands. You visit the historic centre of Lipari with time for shopping, then Vulcano Island, where you can bathe in thermal waters and admire black sand beaches beside an active volcano, before returning to Tropea.
Yes. On day 6 you cross to Sicily for Taormina, where you visit the Ancient Greek Theatre with views towards Mount Etna and walk to the Cathedral square overlooking the bay. The day also includes the hilltop village of Castelmola for panoramic views, before returning to your hotel.
On day 7 you explore the historic centre of Tropea, walking narrow lanes past old palaces to a balcony overlooking the Church of Santa Maria dell'Isola. In the afternoon you visit a family estate to see its olive oil mill and olive grove, with a tasting of local cheeses, cured meats and extra virgin olive oil.
On day 8 you take a hydrofoil from Sorrento to Marina Grande, then minibuses up to Anacapri to visit Villa San Michele. You continue to the Gardens of Augustus to see the Faraglioni rocks, with time for shopping and a visit to Capri's famous Piazzetta before returning to Sorrento.
Day 9 is spent at Caserta, home of the Reggia, a UNESCO World Heritage royal palace. The day is based at a designer outlet next to the palace, with a shuttle available so you can visit the Royal Palace, before driving back to Rome for your final night.
Yes, Southern Mosaic is listed as a group tour, travelling together between regions with sightseeing and transfers arranged. Some visits, such as the Naples cooking class and Underground Rome, are optional so you can tailor the pace.
The itinerary describes breakfast at your hotels and dinner on most evenings, including in Rome, Naples, Tropea and Sorrento. Please ask us for the full list of included meals for your departure, as optional experiences such as the cooking class are priced separately.
The tour begins at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) airport on day 1, and depending on your arrival time you may have a sightseeing tour or go straight to the hotel to rest. The last night is at a hotel at Fiumicino airport, making it easy to catch your flight home on day 10.
Expect a good amount of walking on uneven ground, including the Rome historic centre on foot, the archaeological site at Pompei, the Vesuvius visit and hilly towns such as Taormina, Castelmola and Tropea. Boat days to the Aeolian Islands and Capri also involve getting on and off vessels.
