Belmond Royal Scotsman: Clans, Castles and Isles

This 6-day, 5-night journey explores Scotland's wild west coast. From Edinburgh it runs past Loch Lomond and Rannoch Moor to Spean Bridge and Fort William, then on to Oban and the Isle of Mull, across to the Isle of Bute, and finally to Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway before returning to Edinburgh.

The journey starts and ends at Edinburgh Waverley station. Check-in is at The Balmoral Hotel beside the station, where you leave your luggage, and the train departs in the afternoon. On the last morning a leisurely breakfast is served as the train returns to Edinburgh.

You can choose a Single Cabin, a Double Cabin with a matrimonial bed, a Twin Cabin with two twin beds, or the Grand Suite. The Single Cabin makes this journey a good choice for solo travellers, and the fare for each cabin type is shown on this page.

All meals, all beverages and every excursion in the itinerary are included, along with evening entertainment in the Observation Car. Days follow an unhurried rhythm of a full Scottish breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea on scenic runs, and dinner with cheeseboard, coffee and petits fours.

A 25 percent deposit secures your cabin on Clans, Castles and Isles. The balance is due 125 days before your departure date, so plan final payment roughly four months ahead of travel.

The train leaves Edinburgh in the afternoon and heads west past Loch Lomond, then crosses the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor on the way to Spean Bridge, where it stables for the night. An informal dinner and entertainment in the Observation Car follow.

Yes. On day 2 the train continues west past Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, to Arisaig for a morning walk on the Silver Sands of Morar with views to the Cuillin range. Lunch is served as the train crosses the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct on the way back to Fort William.

On the afternoon of day 2 you choose between exploring Glenfinnan and the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion with a Highlander guide, or a guided hike with mountain guides through Glen Nevis to the Steall Waterfall. The hike suits guests comfortable walking on uneven mountain paths.

On day 3 you arrive in Oban, gateway to the Western Isles, for an exclusive visit to one of the town's most famous local producers. You then cross to the Isle of Mull to visit 13th-century Duart Castle, the historic seat of Clan Maclean, before a formal dinner back on board.

Mount Stuart is an imposing Victorian Gothic mansion set in landscaped gardens and wild woodland on the Isle of Bute. On day 4, after a leisurely breakfast on the way to Wemyss Bay, you take the ferry across to Bute to explore the house and grounds.

Drumlanrig, known as the Pink Palace, is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry above the Nith Valley. On day 5 you choose a tour of the architecture, the formal gardens, or the Buccleuch collection, one of the finest private art collections in Britain.

There are two formal evenings: after the Oban and Mull day, and the farewell gastronomic dinner after Drumlanrig. On formal nights a dark suit, tuxedo or kilt is customary for gentlemen and a cocktail dress or tartan for ladies; other evenings are smart casual.

After dinner guests gather in the Observation Car for live entertainment, from spirited Scottish music on the Fort William night to traditional entertainment after the Isle of Bute day and a musical send-off on the final evening.

Both islands are reached by ferry as part of the day's included excursion: from Oban to the Isle of Mull on day 3 and from Wemyss Bay to the Isle of Bute on day 4. Guests then rejoin the train on the mainland in time for dinner.

The train stables at quiet stations so you sleep to stillness rather than motion. The first night is at Spean Bridge and the second at Fort William, before the train heads south towards the Clyde coast and Dumfries and Galloway for the remaining nights.

Most guests fly into Edinburgh or arrive by train at Waverley station, where check-in takes place at The Balmoral Hotel next door. We recommend arriving the day before departure; we can arrange a pre-journey hotel night in Edinburgh on request.
