Royal Scotsman: Grand Tour of Scotland

This 8-day, 7-night journey circles the whole of Scotland from Edinburgh: north through Perthshire to Boat of Garten, up to Tain and the far north coast near Georgemas Junction, across to Orkney, then the Isle of Skye, Royal Deeside, St Andrews and Elie, Loch Lomond and Drumlanrig Castle, before returning to Edinburgh.

The departure currently on sale leaves Edinburgh on 11 June 2027, a long early-summer day for touring the Highlands and islands. This is a single annual departure, so cabins are limited and we recommend reserving early.

The journey departs from Edinburgh Waverley station. Check-in takes place at The Balmoral Hotel beside the station, where you leave your luggage before boarding, and the journey ends back in Edinburgh on day 8 after a farewell breakfast on board.

Three cabin types are offered: the Double Cabin with a matrimonial bed, the Twin Cabin with two twin beds, and the Grand Suite, the most spacious accommodation on the train. The fare for each cabin type is shown on this page.

Cabins are lined with rich marquetry and furnished with Scottish wools and tartans. Each has lower berth beds, an en suite with shower, washbasin and WC, a dressing table, full-length wardrobe, opening windows, ceiling fans, a 220/240 volt supply, hairdryer, quality toiletries and a cabin service call button.

The fare includes seven nights on board, 24-hour steward service, all meals (full Scottish breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with cheeseboard, coffee and petits fours), all beverages, every excursion in the itinerary and nightly entertainment in the Observation Car.

Travel insurance, domestic or international airfare, transfers before or after the train journey, gratuities for the crew, and personal items or souvenirs are not included. We can help you arrange hotel nights in Edinburgh before or after the journey.

A deposit of 25 percent secures your cabin, and the balance is due 125 days before departure. For the 11 June 2027 departure that means final payment is due in early February 2027.

On day 3 you cross by ferry to the Orkney Islands to explore their Neolithic monuments, including Skara Brae, a 5,000-year-old settlement. Lunch is at a local hotel, and after more time exploring you rejoin the train, which heads south to Dingwall for the night.

Day 4 is a full day on the Isle of Skye with a choice of a guided wilderness day or a cultural tour taking in Kilt Rock, Portree and Dunvegan Castle. Island dining and live folk music round off the day before you return to the train at Kyle of Lochalsh.

On day 2 the train travels north to Tain for a private visit and lunch at Glenmorangie House. In the evening you visit Dunnet Bay near the north coast, gathering beside a beach bonfire, before the train stables near Georgemas Junction, close to the top of mainland Britain.

After a leisurely brunch on day 5, a coach takes you through Royal Deeside to 16th-century Crathes Castle and its celebrated gardens. Back on board you dress for the formal dinner as the train stables overnight at Dundee.

Yes. On day 6 the train crosses the Tay Bridge to St Andrews for a private tour of its medieval ruins and coastline. In the evening you dine at The Ship Inn on the waterfront at Elie, with time for a beach stroll before rejoining the train at Wemyss Bay.

The grand finale on day 7 follows a private cruise on Loch Lomond. At Drumlanrig Castle you enjoy a guided exploration of the gardens and estate, then a gala dinner in the castle's State Dining Room, before the train stables at Kilmarnock for the last night.

Dinners alternate between informal evenings, when smart casual is fine, and formal or gala nights. On formal nights a dark suit, tuxedo or kilt is customary for gentlemen and a cocktail dress or tartan for ladies, so pack for both, especially for the Drumlanrig gala dinner.

Most evenings the train stables at a quiet country station, so you sleep to stillness rather than motion. On this journey overnight stops include Boat of Garten, near Georgemas Junction, Dingwall, Kyle of Lochalsh, Dundee and Kilmarnock.
