Flavors of Portugal - Lisbon to Porto

It is a 5-night, 6-day guided tour running south to north, from Lisbon to Porto. You are met at Lisbon airport on day one and the tour ends after breakfast and check-out in Porto on day six. A Porto to Lisbon version of the same route is also available if you would rather finish in the capital.

Day one is arrival in Lisbon with a welcome dinner. Day two is a full city tour of Lisbon. Day three takes in Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Obidos before an overnight near Fatima. Day four visits the Sanctuary of Fatima and Aveiro, ending in Porto. Day five is the Douro region, with Regua, Pinhao and a river cruise. Day six is check-out after breakfast.

Included are bed and breakfast from the night of day one to breakfast on day six in a four-star hotel, one lunch at a quinta, drinks at meals, a grand tourism coach and a tour guide per the programme, entrance fees to the church and cloisters of the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon and the City Palace in Sintra, the visits and tastings in the programme, the Douro boat trip, and dinner every night including a Fado evening in Lisbon.

Accommodation is in four-star hotels on a bed and breakfast basis, from the night of day one through to breakfast on day six. You stay two nights in Lisbon, one night in the Fatima area and two nights in Porto, so there are only two hotel changes across the whole tour. Breakfast is included every morning and dinner every night, plus one lunch at a quinta in the Douro on day five. The other lunches are free time so you can eat where you like. Drinks are included with the included meals at a set allowance per person, covering water and a house beverage; anything beyond that allowance is payable locally.

The day covers Belem, where many of the great Portuguese explorers set out, with the Tower of Belem and the Hieronymite Monastery, and a chance to try the famous pastel de Belem. In the afternoon you visit Alfama, the oldest district of the city, and climb to a belvedere for the view over the rooftops. Lisbon is the city of seven hills, so comfortable shoes matter.

Yes. The entrance fee for the church and cloisters of the Hieronymite Monastery, also known as the Jeronimos Monastery, is included in the tour price. The cloisters are the great showpiece of Manueline art, carved with maritime motifs from the age of the Discoveries. The Tower of Belem is seen from the outside.

Alfama is the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, a hillside maze of winding streets, flowered balconies and small squares that survived the 1755 earthquake. It is also the traditional home of Fado. The tour walks through it and climbs to a belvedere viewpoint, which is the best vantage point in the city for photographs over the terracotta rooftops.

The Palace of Sintra is the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, and entry is included. Sintra itself combines hilltop fortifications, fairytale castles, forest and elaborate gardens. The day also includes a taste of the traditional Queijada dessert, a stop at the cliffs of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and free time for lunch and shopping.

Obidos is a hilltop town encircled by a fortified wall, with exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture inside. The visit includes a tasting of the local Ginginha speciality, traditionally served in a small chocolate cup, and the chance to watch a local artisan hand-painting tiles. Both are included in the tour price.

On the morning of day four you visit the Sanctuary of Fatima, a group of Catholic religious buildings that forms one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, with lunch and free time afterwards. Because you stay nearby the night before, you have the chance to see the site in the evening as well as by day.

Aveiro is called the Venice of Portugal for the canals that run through it and the moliceiros that work them, small brightly coloured boats with painted bows and sterns, once used to harvest seaweed. A mini-cruise on a moliceiro is included. You also stop at the railway station to see the tile panels on its facade illustrating the monuments of the region.

Ovos moles are Aveiro's signature sweet: a soft egg-yolk and sugar filling inside a thin wafer shell, sometimes with chocolate. A short hands-on workshop on how they are made is included on day four, along with a tasting. It is a genuinely local speciality with protected status, and a good souvenir to take onward to Porto.

Day five is a full day out from Porto. You travel to Regua, the capital of the Douro region, for sightseeing and a tasting at a local estate, then a hearty lunch at a quinta. In the afternoon there is a two-hour boat trip from Pinhao to Tua and back, with a stop at the historic Pinhao railway station and its tile panels, before dinner back in Porto.

One of the included dinners in Lisbon is accompanied by live Fado, the melancholy Portuguese song style recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. It is included in the tour price rather than sold as an optional extra, and it comes early in the itinerary, which sets the tone for the rest of the journey north.
