Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
It is a 1-night journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. You board in Paris, settle into your cabin or suite, dine in the restored 1920s carriages as the train crosses Europe overnight, and arrive in Vienna the next day after breakfast on board. It suits travellers who want the full experience of the train over a single night.
The Prague Route describes the routing this Paris to Vienna service follows, travelling by way of Prague rather than taking the most direct line between the two capitals. It is the reason the journey is listed separately from other Paris to Vienna departures. Exact routing and timings for your date are confirmed in your travel documents.
Yes. The same routing is offered westbound as Vienna to Paris on the Prague Route, with its own set of dates. Some travellers combine the two, spending a few nights in Vienna in between and returning by train rather than flying. Ask us and we will send the dates and fares for both directions side by side.
Five categories can be booked: Historic Cabin, Suite - Double, Suite - Twin, Grand Suite and L'Observatoire, all within meticulously restored 1920s carriages. Each comes with steward service for the duration of the journey. Availability and fares by category for your chosen date are shown in the booking list on this page.
The Historic Cabin is the classic accommodation on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a restored 1920s compartment with original marquetry and fittings, converted by your steward from daytime seating to sleeping accommodation in the evening. It is the entry-level category and the lead-in fare on this page is based on it. Suites offer more space and additional facilities.
One night on board is included, together with the table d'hote dining in the restored dining cars, afternoon tea, a welcome beverage, on-board entertainment and steward service throughout. Everything listed as included in the itinerary is covered, so nothing further is charged for the on-board programme.
Travel to Paris and onward from Vienna is not included, nor are hotels at either end, personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Anything ordered outside the included dining programme is settled on board. We are happy to quote separately for hotels and transfers in both cities.
Dinner is a table d'hote menu served in the restored dining cars shortly after departure from Paris, and breakfast follows the next morning before arrival in Vienna. Afternoon tea is part of the included programme where the timings of your departure allow. Let us know about any dietary requirements when you book so the train can prepare.
The evening centres on dinner in the 1920s dining cars followed by Bar Car '3674', where there is on-board entertainment and where guests gather for drinks and conversation before retiring. Some guests simply watch the landscapes of central Europe slip past from their cabin. Your steward is on hand throughout the night.
Departures currently on sale run from 19 August 2027 to 18 December 2027, with ten dates open at the time of writing. Each date and its fare by accommodation category appear in the booking list on this page. Dates close to the end of the year attract particular demand, so early enquiry is sensible.
Fares are quoted per person based on two people sharing a cabin or suite, and they vary by category and by date. Rather than quote a figure that may move, we show the exact fare for each departure in the booking list on this page and confirm the final amount in writing before taking any payment.
Yes. A single occupancy fare is published and shown alongside the sharing fare on this page. Because one guest has the whole cabin or suite, the single fare is higher than the per person sharing rate. Solo space is limited on each departure, so contact us early if you plan to travel on your own.
A deposit of 15 percent of the booking value confirms your accommodation, and the balance falls due 61 days before departure. Bookings made inside 61 days are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact deposit, the balance and the date it is due.
Child fares are based on age at the departure date, with bands of 0 to under 5 years and 5 to under 12 years; anyone aged 12 or over pays the adult fare. The journey is formal in character with a long dinner and a short night. Tell us the ages in your party when you enquire and we will advise on fares and accommodation.
The journey begins in Paris, and the exact station and boarding time for your departure are confirmed in the travel documents we send before you travel. Travel to Paris is not included, so we recommend arriving the day before rather than on the morning itself. We can arrange hotel nights and private transfers in the city.
Breakfast is served on board on the final morning and the journey concludes in Vienna, from where onward travel is yours to arrange. We can quote for a transfer to your Vienna hotel or the airport and for hotel nights in the city. We suggest not booking a tight onward connection, as arrival times can vary slightly.
Yes. Hotels are not part of the fare, but we arrange them regularly and can quote for stays in Paris before the train and Vienna afterwards, along with transfers between hotel, station and airport. Most guests on a one-night journey build several nights into at least one of the two cities.
Cabins and suites in restored 1920s carriages are elegant rather than spacious, so travelling light makes the journey far more comfortable, with a small overnight bag kept to hand for the single night. Specific luggage guidance for your departure, including how larger cases are handled, is included in the documents we send before you travel.
Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend comprehensive cover, including cancellation protection, from the moment you pay your deposit. France, Austria and the countries the train crosses on this routing are within the Schengen area, so entry requirements depend on your nationality - check with the relevant consulate or embassy well ahead of travel.
