Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
This is a 3-night journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, departing Paris and arriving in Venice on the fourth morning. You board in Paris, settle into your cabin or suite, and spend two full days on board crossing Europe before breakfast on the last morning as the train reaches Venice. It is one of the longer VSOE itineraries.
It runs one way, from Paris to Venice. You will need to arrange your own travel to Paris before the journey and onward from Venice afterwards, which gives you the freedom to build city stays at either end. We are happy to quote for hotels and transfers in both cities so the whole trip is arranged in one place.
Five categories are offered: Historic Cabin, Suite - Double, Suite - Twin, Grand Suite and L'Observatoire. Each is housed in a meticulously restored 1920s carriage, with a steward looking after you throughout. Availability and the fare for each category on your chosen departure are shown in the booking list on this page.
The Historic Cabin is the classic accommodation on board, in a restored 1920s carriage with original marquetry and fittings, converted from a daytime seating arrangement to sleeping accommodation each evening by your steward. It is the entry-level category and the lead-in fare shown on this page is based on it. Suites offer more space and additional facilities.
Your fare covers three nights on board, the table d'hote dinners, brunch and afternoon tea served in the restored dining cars, a welcome beverage and on-board entertainment, and steward service throughout the journey. Everything described as included in the itinerary is covered, so the on-board programme requires no further payment.
Travel to Paris and onward from Venice is not included, nor are hotels at either end, personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Items ordered outside the included dining programme, such as additional drinks in the Bar Car, are settled on board before you disembark.
Dining is in the restored dining cars and the included programme covers table d'hote dinners, brunch and afternoon tea across the journey. Dinner is the centrepiece of each evening, served in surroundings that have been kept faithful to the 1920s. Tell us about any dietary requirements when you book so they can be prepared for in advance.
Bar Car '3674' is the social heart of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, where guests gather before and after dinner for drinks and on-board entertainment. It takes its name from the carriage's own number. Over three nights it becomes the natural place to meet fellow travellers as the landscapes of Europe pass the windows.
The days on board are the experience: dining in the 1920s carriages, afternoon tea, time in Bar Car '3674' and watching the changing European scenery from your cabin or suite. There is no scheduled off-train touring on this itinerary, which is what allows the journey to feel unhurried. Your steward is on hand throughout.
The departure currently listed is 20 June 2027, a Sunday, with availability shown by accommodation category in the booking list on this page. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express dates are released a season at a time and the longer itineraries sell early. Contact us and we will confirm what is still open in each category.
Fares are quoted per person based on two people sharing, and vary by accommodation category and by departure date. Rather than quote a figure that may move, we show the exact fare for each departure and category in the booking list on this page, and confirm the final amount in writing before any payment is taken.
Yes. A single occupancy fare is published for this journey and appears alongside the sharing fare on this page. Because a solo guest has the whole cabin or suite, the single fare is higher than the per person sharing rate. Solo space is limited on each departure, so contact us early if you plan to travel on your own.
A deposit of 15 percent of the booking value confirms your accommodation, and the balance is due 61 days before departure. Bookings made within 61 days of the departure date are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation sets out the exact deposit, the balance and the date it falls due.
Child fares are based on age at the departure date, with bands of 0 to under 5 years and 5 to under 12 years; guests aged 12 and over pay the adult fare. The journey is formal in character, with long dinners and quiet days on board. Tell us the ages in your party when you enquire and we will confirm both fares and accommodation options.
Flights and rail travel to Paris are not included, so you can arrive however suits you. We recommend arriving the day before rather than on the morning of departure, and we can arrange hotel nights and private transfers in Paris on request. The exact boarding station and time are confirmed in the travel documents we send before you travel.
Yes. Hotels are not part of this fare, but we regularly arrange stays at both ends and can quote for accommodation and transfers in Paris beforehand and Venice afterwards. Many guests build several nights into Venice at the end, since the journey arrives there in the morning. Send us your dates and we will prepare a proposal.
Cabins and suites on a restored 1920s train are elegant rather than large, so travelling light makes the journey far more comfortable, with a smaller overnight bag kept to hand. Specific luggage guidance for your departure, including how larger cases are handled, is included in the documents we send you before you travel.
Guests dress up for this journey: evenings in the dining cars and Bar Car '3674' are formal in spirit, while daytime is smart and comfortable. The exact guidance for your departure is set out in the travel documents we send in advance, and we are happy to talk through what to pack when you book.
Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend comprehensive cover, including cancellation protection, from the moment you pay your deposit. France and Italy are both in the Schengen area, and the train also crosses other Schengen countries en route, so check entry requirements for your nationality with the relevant consulate or embassy well before travelling.
