Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: Paris to the Amalfi Coast

This is a 3-night journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, leaving Paris and arriving on the Amalfi Coast on the fourth morning. You board in Paris, spend two full days on board crossing Europe and descending through Italy, and disembark after breakfast on the final day. It is one of the train's most southerly itineraries.

It runs one way, from Paris to the Amalfi Coast. Your travel to Paris beforehand and onward travel afterwards are arranged separately, which leaves you free to stay on in southern Italy at the end. We can quote for hotels and transfers at both ends so the whole trip is organised in one place.

Five categories are available: Historic Cabin, Suite - Double, Suite - Twin, Grand Suite and L'Observatoire. Each sits within a meticulously restored 1920s carriage, with a steward looking after you throughout the three nights. The Historic Cabin is the classic accommodation, a restored 1920s compartment converted by your steward from daytime seating to sleeping accommodation each evening, and it is the category the lead-in fare is based on. Suites, including the Grand Suite and L'Observatoire, offer considerably more space and additional facilities. The fare for each is shown against the departure on this page.

Three nights on board are included, along with the table d'hote dinners, brunch and afternoon tea served in the restored dining cars, a welcome beverage, on-board entertainment and steward service throughout the journey. Everything described as included in the itinerary is covered, so the on-board programme needs no further payment.

Travel to Paris and onward from the Amalfi Coast is not included, nor are hotels at either end, personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Anything ordered outside the included dining programme is settled on board before you disembark. We can quote separately for hotels and transfers.

The included programme covers table d'hote dinners, brunch and afternoon tea, all served in the restored 1920s dining cars where the setting is as much a part of the experience as the food. Dinner is the highlight of each evening on board. Let us know about any dietary requirements when you book so they can be arranged in advance.

Bar Car '3674', named after the carriage's own number, is where guests gather before and after dinner for drinks, on-board entertainment and conversation. Across three nights it becomes the social centre of the train. It is one of the most photographed spaces on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

There is no scheduled off-train touring on this journey - the two full days between Paris and the Amalfi Coast are spent entirely on board, dining, taking afternoon tea, enjoying Bar Car '3674' and watching Europe pass the window. Guests who want touring built in usually add days at either end, which we are happy to arrange.

Fares are quoted per person based on two people sharing, and vary by accommodation category and departure date. Rather than publish a figure that may move, we show the exact fare for each departure and category in the booking list on this page, and confirm the final amount in writing before any payment is taken.

Yes. A single occupancy fare is published and shown alongside the sharing fare on this page. Because a solo guest has the whole cabin or suite for three nights, the single fare is higher than the per person sharing rate. Solo space is limited on each departure, so it is worth contacting us early.

A deposit of 15 percent of the booking value confirms your accommodation, with the balance due 61 days before departure. Bookings made within 61 days of the departure date are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation sets out the exact deposit, the balance and the date it falls due.

Child pricing is based on age at the departure date, in bands of 0 to under 5 years and 5 to under 12 years; guests aged 12 and over pay the adult fare. The journey is formal in character, with long dinners and quiet days on board. Tell us the ages in your party when you enquire and we will confirm fares and suitable accommodation.

Travel to Paris is not included, so you can arrive by air or by rail as you prefer. We recommend arriving the day before rather than on the morning of departure, and we can arrange hotel nights and private transfers. Breakfast is served on board on the final morning and the journey concludes on the Amalfi Coast, after which onward travel is yours to arrange. Many guests add several nights on the coast, and we are happy to quote for hotels and private transfers.

Yes. Hotels are not part of this fare, but we arrange them regularly and can quote for stays in Paris before the journey and on the Amalfi Coast afterwards, along with transfers between the train, your hotel and the airport. Given the one-way routing, an extended stay in southern Italy at the end makes good sense.

Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend comprehensive cover, including cancellation protection, from the moment you pay your deposit. France and Italy are both in the Schengen area, as are other countries the train crosses, so check entry requirements for your nationality with the relevant consulate or embassy well before you travel.
