Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
It is a 1-night journey that begins in Florence and ends in Paris. You board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in Florence, dine in the restored 1920s dining cars as the train sets off north across Europe, sleep in your cabin or suite, and arrive in Paris the following day after breakfast on board.
Yes, it runs one way from Florence to Paris. Travel to Florence beforehand and onward from Paris afterwards are arranged separately, which allows you to combine the train with time in Tuscany at the start and in Paris at the end. We can quote for hotels and private transfers in both cities so everything sits on one booking.
Florence makes an unusual and appealing starting point: you can spend a few days in the Tuscan capital first and then leave Italy in period style rather than by air. The train departs from Florence and travels north overnight towards Paris. Exact boarding station and departure time for your date are confirmed in your travel documents.
Five are offered on this route: Historic Cabin, Suite - Double, Suite - Twin, Grand Suite and L'Observatoire, all within meticulously restored 1920s carriages with steward service throughout. The lead-in fare shown on this page is based on the Historic Cabin. Availability and fares by category for your date are in the booking list on this page.
The Grand Suites sit at the top of the range alongside L'Observatoire, offering markedly more space and additional facilities than a Historic Cabin or a standard Suite. Only a small number exist on the train, so they are released in limited numbers on each departure. Tell us your date and we will confirm availability and the current fare.
One night on board is included, along with the table d'hote dining served in the restored dining cars, afternoon tea, a welcome beverage, on-board entertainment and steward service throughout the journey. Everything described as included in the itinerary is covered, so the on-board programme needs no further payment.
Travel to Florence and onward from Paris is not included, nor are hotels at either end, personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Anything ordered outside the included dining programme is settled on board before you disembark. We can quote separately for hotels and transfers in both cities.
Dinner is a table d'hote menu served in the restored 1920s dining cars after the train leaves Florence, with breakfast the following morning before arrival in Paris. Afternoon tea is part of the included programme where the timings of your departure allow. Tell us about dietary requirements when you book so they can be arranged in advance.
After dinner in the dining cars, the evening continues in Bar Car '3674', named after the carriage's own number, where there is on-board entertainment and guests gather for drinks and conversation. Your steward prepares your cabin for the night while you are away from it. Many guests simply watch the Alpine and European landscapes pass from the window.
Departures currently on sale run from 13 March 2027 through to 11 September 2027, with eight dates open at the time of writing. Every date and the fare for each accommodation category appear in the booking list on this page. This route has fewer dates than some others, so it is worth enquiring as soon as your plans firm up.
Fares are quoted per person based on two people sharing a cabin or suite, and vary by category and by departure date. Rather than quote a figure that may move, we show the exact fare for each departure in the booking list on this page and confirm the final amount in writing before any payment is taken.
Yes. A single occupancy fare is published for this journey and is shown alongside the sharing fare on this page. Because a solo guest occupies the whole cabin or suite, the single fare is higher than the per person sharing rate. Solo space is limited on each departure, so contact us early if you are travelling alone.
A deposit of 15 percent of the booking value confirms your accommodation, with the balance due 61 days before departure. Bookings made within 61 days of the departure date are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation sets out the exact deposit, the balance and the due date.
Child fares are based on age at the departure date, with bands of 0 to under 5 years and 5 to under 12 years; anyone aged 12 or over pays the adult fare. The journey is formal in character, with a long dinner and a single night on board. Tell us the ages in your party and we will confirm fares and suitable accommodation.
Yes. Hotels are not part of this fare, but we regularly arrange stays in Florence and elsewhere in Tuscany before the journey, along with private transfers to the station on departure day. Building a few nights in Tuscany before boarding is the most popular way to use this route. Send us your dates and we will prepare a proposal.
Breakfast is served on board before arrival, and the journey concludes in Paris, from where onward travel is yours to arrange. We can quote for a transfer to your Paris hotel or the airport and for hotel nights in the city afterwards. We suggest avoiding a tight onward flight, as arrival times can vary slightly.
The season runs from March to September, so early departures catch Tuscany and central Europe in spring, while the later dates fall at the end of the summer with longer, warmer evenings. The on-board experience is the same on every date. Tell us which months suit you and we will confirm what is still available.
Guests dress up on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: the evening is formal in spirit, with smart, comfortable clothing by day. Cabins in restored 1920s carriages are elegant rather than large, so travel light and keep a small overnight bag to hand. Full guidance on luggage and dress for your departure comes with your travel documents.
Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend comprehensive cover, including cancellation protection, from the moment you pay your deposit. Italy, France and the countries the train crosses on the way north are within the Schengen area, so entry requirements depend on your nationality - check with the relevant consulate or embassy before travelling.
