La Dolce Vita Orient Express: Venice & Tuscany

It is a three-day, two-night round trip that begins and ends in Rome. You spend both nights in your cabin on board the train, with the days given to Venice and to the Tuscan leg of the route before the train returns to Rome Ostiense on the final morning.

Both ends are at Rome Ostiense station, where the train has its own private lounge. A private transfer from your hotel or the airport brings you to the lounge on day one, and on the last morning you step off in the same place, back in the centre of Rome.

The itinerary is sold in Deluxe Cabin and Cabin Suite categories. The train carries 12 Deluxe cabins, 18 suites and the single La Dolce Vita Suite, so capacity is small and cabins sell out well ahead. The current fare for each category is shown on this page.

The price covers accommodation on board in your chosen cabin category, all meals from breakfast through dinner with menus curated by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, selected beverages on board including drinks served with meals, the off-train excursions described in the itinerary, live entertainment in the Bar Car and a dedicated cabin steward.

Travel to Rome and home again is not included, nor are personal expenses, gratuities, travel insurance or anything not expressly listed in the itinerary. Optional a la carte experiences in Venice are arranged separately. We are happy to quote hotel nights in Rome before or after the journey.

Fares begin from around EUR 7,880 per person based on two people sharing a cabin, and vary with cabin category and departure. The exact fare for each departure is shown on this page, which is the figure to rely on, since rates for a train with this few cabins move with demand.

Yes, sole occupancy is available on request and carries a supplement over the per-person sharing fare. With only 30 or so cabins on the whole train, single-use space is limited, so it is best requested as early as possible for the date you want.

A deposit of 30 percent of the tour price confirms your cabin and is non-refundable. The balance is due 125 days before departure, and bookings made within 125 days of departure are payable in full at the time of booking. Your written confirmation shows the exact amounts and the dates they fall due.

The train leaves Rome Ostiense in the evening and you settle into your cabin as the Roman countryside slips past. Dinner is served in the Restaurant Car, then the Bar Car comes alive with a pianist and vocalist, which is very much the character of this train after dark.

The train reaches Venezia Santa Lucia by late morning on day two, where local hosts meet you and take you by private water taxi into the heart of the city, which is the most memorable way to arrive. The afternoon is yours in Venice before you return to the train.

It is a guided visit to the last working furnace of its kind in Venice, normally closed to the public, where mosaic glass and Venetian gold leaf are still made by hand. A local expert shows you how fragments of glass become the shimmering tesserae used in mosaics across the city.

Breakfast can be taken in your cabin or in the Restaurant Car, and lunch and dinner are served on board except where the itinerary places a meal ashore.

In most cases yes, but the galley is small and the menus are set for each departure, so tell us about allergies, intolerances or dietary preferences when you book rather than on the day. We will pass the details on so the kitchen can plan for you in advance.

Daytime dress is relaxed, and evenings in the Restaurant and Bar Cars lean towards smart, in keeping with the 1960s Italian style of the interiors. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the Venice excursion, where you will be on foot over bridges and stone paving for much of the afternoon.

It works well as a short, high-comfort introduction, since you see Venice and a Tuscan city without changing hotels or handling luggage, and you begin and end in Rome. Many guests add nights in Rome at either end to see the city properly, which we can arrange for you.

The time on board is entirely relaxed, but the excursions involve walking in cities built long before cars. Venice in particular means bridges, steps and stone paving, and there is no vehicle access in the historic centre. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
