Eastern & Oriental Express: Tastes of Tomorrow – Wild Malaysia

This is a three-night journey boarding at Woodlands station in Singapore and returning there on the morning of day four. It heads north to Gemas, then inland along the Jungle Railway to Taman Negara, before crossing the peninsula to Penang and running south again through Johor. The same cabin is yours throughout.

Tastes of Tomorrow is the culinary edition of the Wild Malaysia route, where menus are built to bridge origin and destination - soul-warming comfort set against the essence of Southeast Asia. Special culinary experiences are added to the excursion programme ashore. The route itself is unchanged: rainforest first, then the island of Penang.

The Jungle Railway is the inland line that runs up the spine of peninsular Malaysia, away from the developed west coast and through the wildest country the train can reach. Day two follows it towards Taman Negara, with rainforest pressing close to the window for hours at a stretch. It is the scenic heart of this particular itinerary.

At Taman Negara you choose one excursion: a tiger-conservation experience, a guided nature-photography outing, an e-bicycle ride to a cave system, or a wellness session in the forest. Taman Negara is one of the oldest rainforests on earth and the last stronghold of the Malayan tiger. Guides are local specialists rather than general tour staff.

On day three the train reaches the west coast and you cross to Penang Island. Choose George Town by Vespa, a Peranakan cookery discovery that digs into the island's Straits Chinese heritage, or independent exploration by tri-shaw. You rejoin the train at Butterworth for the Dior Spa and a convivial final evening.

You board at Woodlands train station in the north of Singapore, close to the causeway, rather than at a city-centre station. Return transfers between your Singapore accommodation and Woodlands are included in the fare at no extra cost. The pick-up time comes with your final travel documents.

Yes. One traveller taking a whole cabin pays twice the sharing rate, from about $13,000 on this departure. Because the train has communal dining and bar cars, solo travellers rarely feel adrift. Availability is limited on a single-date departure, so ask us to check before booking flights.

Three nights on board with 24-hour steward service, all meals - four-course dinner daily, continental breakfast in the cabin, three-course lunch and afternoon tea - and house beverages throughout. The guided tour of Taman Negara National Park, the Penang Island excursion and the special culinary experiences are included, as are return transfers to Woodlands station. Onboard entertainment completes the fare.

Airfares, hotels in Singapore before or after the journey, and travel insurance sit outside the fare. Spa treatments, beverages beyond the house selection, and personal purchases are charged separately. Gratuities are discretionary.

Menus are authored by chef Andre Chiang, with dinner running to four courses and lunch to three, plus afternoon tea and a continental breakfast brought to your cabin. Yes, there is a Dior Spa on board, and the run down from Butterworth on the final evening is a natural moment to use it. Treatments are reserved separately once you are on the train. With only three nights, book your slot early rather than leaving it to the last day.

Daytime is smart casual and light, and the rainforest excursions call for closed shoes, long sleeves and insect repellent. Evenings are more formal in the Dining Car - a jacket for gentlemen, a dress or equivalent for ladies. Carry a light layer for the air conditioning, which contrasts sharply with the humidity outside.

This edition departs from Singapore on 28 September 2026, a Monday. That is the date currently on sale, and the departure list on this page shows it alongside the cabin grades still available. Special culinary editions do not repeat through the season the way scheduled journeys do.

A 15 percent deposit confirms your cabin, and the balance is payable 56 days before departure. If you book within 56 days of the date, the fare is due in full straight away. Exact amounts are confirmed in writing before any payment is processed.

Child rates follow the traveller's age on the departure date, with one band for children under five and another for ages five to under twelve. Fly into Singapore Changi, which has direct services from most major hubs, and stay in the city the night before departure. Transfers from your Singapore accommodation to Woodlands station are included, so you do not need to work out the journey north yourself. Arriving a day early protects you against flight disruption.

Late September in Malaysia is hot and humid, typically around thirty degrees Celsius, with short heavy showers most likely in the afternoon. Rainforest days feel wetter than the coast whatever the forecast says. Pack quick-drying clothes, a compact rain layer, insect repellent and sun protection.
