Itinerary

Itinerary

DAY 1
BALFOUR / ELANDSLAAGTE / HEIDELBERG / NEWCASTLE / PRETORIA

Pretoria's Highveld Journey to Elandslaagte

10:00 — Depart Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria. The train travels southeast, crossing the Highveld and the goldfields of the Witwatersrand towards Heidelberg, known as the site of the first Rand gold strike, and Balfour, a small mining town in Mpumalanga. Guests can freshen up in their suites before gathering in the lounge and observation cars. 13:00 — Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train passes the Drakensberg Mountains, named by the Voortrekkers who perceived the unbroken chain of heavily weathered peaks as dragon spines. 16:30 — Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars. The train then climbs to Majuba Hill, site of the decisive battle that ended the First Anglo Boer War, and passes Newcastle, home to what is reputed to be the largest cella-dome Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere. 19:30 — Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Elandslaagte. Dress code for dinner is Formal. The train also passes Glencoe, the site of the first battle of the Anglo Boer War and now a coalfields center.

DAY 2
ESTCOURT / NAMBITI RESERVE / SPIONKOP

Nambiti Wildlife & Spionkop Battlefields

05:45 — Breakfast is served in the dining cars until the train's departure for the day's excursions. You then enjoy a game drive in the Nambiti Reserve, a private Big Five bush retreat spanning 20,000 acres of malaria-free bushveld. The reserve boasts incredible biodiversity, including savannah, grasslands, thornveld, and tall acacia trees, offering excellent opportunities to spot wildlife. 11:00 — Brunch is served in the dining cars after your game drive. Afterwards, a transfer of approximately 30 minutes takes you to Spionkop Lodge for the afternoon. Guests have a choice of two excursions: either hear the historic tale of the Battle of Spionkop while overlooking the reserve, or enjoy a nature drive in the 11,000-acre reserve. 19:30 — Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Estcourt. Dress code for dinner is Formal. Shortly after Chieveley, on the right of the track, you'll see a memorial to Winston Churchill, who was captured here in November 1899 while trying to free an armoured train trapped by a Boer ambush.

Ardmore Ceramics and Valley of a Thousand Hills

07:00 — Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. The train descends the escarpment towards Lions River.
