Penetrate Al-Andalus history and culture. This route invites you to enjoy the artisan products, cuisine, popular festivals and customs of the towns and villages linked to the Andalusí civilisation.
Day 1. Start Parador for the Trail. Sunday (one night stay)
(Málaga Gibralfaro)
Malaga is the starting point of the Andalusí Legacy Trail with the Alcazaba fortress a beautiful example of said legacy. It was the palace of the Nasrid monarchs with construction beginning in the 11th century. Today it houses the Provincial Archaeology Museum exhibiting interesting pieces from the Palaeolithic period and other ancient Mediterranean cultures.
The stunning gardens are filled with fountains and streams creating a special peaceful atmosphere. Once the visit to the Alcazaba is finished, the ruins of the Roman Theatre may be visited.
Gibralfaro Castle is nearby - a possibly Phoenician palace where the Granada caliph Yusuf I ordered the present fort to be built in the 14th century. Two towers link to the Alcazaba via a passage. Other areas of interest include the Cathedral, the Cathedral Museum and the Virgin of Victory Shrine. The Museum of Fine Art and the Picasso Museum make for interesting visits.
Day 2. Monday (one night stay)
(Ronda)
Vertiginous in all aspects, the city was occupied by the Celts, Romans and Moors, with the exquisite Arab Baths still preserved from the latter era (San Miguel Street) alongside other remains at Los Molinos Gate, Santa María la Mayor church, the minaret of San Sebastián and the House of the Giant. Ronda is also inevitably its beautiful Bullring, considered one of the most outstanding in the world. The series of so-called White Villages are located between Ronda and Arcos which the Almoravids conquered before taking Granada.
Days 3 and 4. Tuesday and Wednesday (two-night stay)
(Antequera)
Thanks to its privileged geographical location, several civilisations have passed through Antequera leaving an interesting cultural legacy. One of the most important monuments is the Dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral, dating back to the Bronze Age. Strolling around Antequera's historic quarter is like travelling back in time. One interesting option is to visit the churches of San Juan Bautista and San Sebastián among others, or discover the Moorish Alcazaba fortress. Other important monuments include the Temple of Papabellotas Castle and the 17th and 18th century mansions. They are all characterised by their impressive Spanish baroque style architecture. In the centre of Antequera, you can discover the Royal Collegiate Church of San Sebastián, which dates from the 16th Century. And don't miss the Convent of the Incarnation, followed by a visit to the Plaza del Coso Viejo, a beautiful bullring close to the Convent. This is just a small part of the many surprises Antequera holds for you.
Day 5. Thursday (one night stay)
(Carmona)
Sitting on the River Corbones plain, Carmona is a city that stands out for its monumental stature and the marks left by different cultures having settled there throughout its long history. Churches, palaces and walls make up the important artistic heritage housed in the old town, overlooked by the imposing Moorish fort - the Rey Don Pedro Royal Palace. Lying just a few kilometres from Seville, Ishbilya allows you to enjoy the city's monumental and artistic heritage such as the Royal Palace, begun by Abd-ar-Rahman III in 913. The Cathedral, the Giralda, the Golden Tower and the many leisure opportunities available in Seville are also worth the effort.
Days 6 and 7. Friday and Saturday (two-night stay)
(Córdoba)
Cordoba was a dream-come-true for the caliphs, the capital of the Umayyad caliphate and the centre of learning in the Islamic west during said period. The splendour of the culture and places such as the Mosque-Cathedral and Medina Azahara can be explored in the city and the surrounding areas. The Synagogue, the city walls, the Roman bridge, the royal stables and interesting museums such as the Julio Romero de Torres Museum, the Archaeology Museum, the Bullfighting Museum and the Museum of Fine Art are also real highlights. Losing oneself in Cordoba's beautiful nooks is a true pleasure of the senses; the city has one of the most complex and rich urban networks on the trail with spaces full of enchantment and sensuality.
